Sri Lanka Unveils Project to Refurbish One Hundred Railway Stations

(MENAFN) The Sri Lankan government has initiated the "Dream Destination" project, targeting the refurbishment of 100 railway stations nationwide, according to a statement released Saturday by the President’s Media Division (PMD).

The initiative was officially launched at a ceremony Friday evening attended by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the PMD confirmed. During the event, Transport Minister Bimal Ratnayake formally presented the Road Safety Action Plan 2025-2026 to President Dissanayake.

The project’s core objective is to establish a network of railway stations that are not only clean and visually appealing but also prioritize the safety and comfort of all travelers, including individuals with special needs, the PMD detailed.

Emphasizing the economic consequences, Ratnayake noted that traffic congestion causes an estimated annual loss of 2 to 3 percent of the country’s GDP, stressing that improving public transport is now a critical priority.

The minister further revealed plans to propose new railway line construction in the upcoming budget, alongside upgrading infrastructure to bolster rail-based cargo transport.
